The Concept of Cupid
Cupid is a baby who carries a bow and arrow everywhere he flies. Upon command (or by his own choice - dependent on the history of origin you believe) he shoots the arrow at someone who then falls in love with the next person they see. If Cupid shoots two bows at the same time, the two people they hit will fall for each other.
The fact that Cupid uses an arrow is to denote that love often hurts.
The fact that Cupid has the ability to shoot one arrow or two denotes that love doesn’t break even - one can love another unrequitedly, or both can fall together.
The fact that Cupid is a baby explains that love is young and never grows old.
